Want to learn more about Perioprotect, or Laser Gum Therapy?

The World Health Organization published an oral health report in 2003, indicating that approximately 85% of adults have some form of gum disease.  Between your teeth and your gums is a small valley, called the sulcus or, periodontal pocket.  It’s only 1-3 mm deep in healthy gum tissue. Brushing and flossing usually keep this area clean and healthy.  There are special cells in the sulcus that form a saliva-like fluid that flows out of the pocket.  The fluid is called crevicular flow and the body produces it to help keep the area clean. When food builds up in this area, a community of bacteria called a biofilm can develop and cause an infection.  Signs of gum infections include bleeding gums that can be swollen, red and tender.  Your teeth may also become sensitive.  This early infection is called gingivitis.

Dentists have many options when treating your gum disease.  The standard cleaning procedures called scaling and root planing can help reduce some of the bacteria involved.  Unfortunately, bacteria are continually re-introduced into the mouth and this procedure often needs to be repeated to maintain oral health.  When conditions are very severe, surgery is another option.  Since the condition is an infection, many dentists have attempted to help patients deliver anti-bacterial medications, like mouth rinses, into the sulcus to help kill the pathogens.  But remember the crevicular fluid that your body makes to clean your gum tissue?  With an increased infection, the fluid flow increases, sometimes as much as thirty times.  It is impossible to maintain enough of the medication in the pocket to kill the bacteria because the medicine is constantly flushed out.

The Perioprotect method  has a way around this obstacle.  The method includes a specially designed prescription tray that is custom-made for your mouth, so that medication can be placed into the pocket, the site of the infection.  The design of the tray prevents medication from being quickly washed away.  This placement gives the medicine time to fight the bacterial infection. The Perioprotect method overcomes previous obstacles, is easy, comfortable and a very effective option when used as directed. While a serious medical condition, your periodontal disease does not have to diminish your quality of life.

Perioprotect is FDA approved and has been called nothing short of miraculous, considering that it may save you from having to undergo gum surgery.  It’s easy, completely painless, and effective.  If you have been told that you may need gum surgery, contact Preston Dental Center today, 919.460.0963, to discuss your options.

“Good oral health has been linked to longevity, yet one of the most common factors associated with infrequent dental checkups is just being male.”

Men are less likely than women to take care of their physical health. They often neglect their oral health for years, visiting a dentist only when a problem arises. The average man brushes his teeth 1.9 times a day and will lose 5.4 teeth by age 72. If he smokes, he can plan on losing 12 teeth by age 72! Men are also more likely than women to develop oral and throat cancer and periodontal (gum) disease.

In a previous blog, we discussed dental issues pertaining specifically to women. It’s only fair that we give men their moment in the spotlight! There are a number of dental issues that commonly affect men; many of them are linked to lifestyle or other general health issues. Here are our top three:

  1. Tobacco use: Smoking and Chewing Tobacco’s affect on Dental Health

If you smoke or chew tobacco, you have an increased risk for gum disease and oral cancer. Men are affected twice as often as women. 95% of oral cancers occur in those aged 40 years and over. Over 8,000 people die per year from oral and pharyngeal diseases. If you use tobacco, it’s important to see a dentist frequently for cleanings and to ensure your mouth remains healthy. Your general dentist can perform a thorough screening for oral cancer and can help with tobacco cessation.

  2. Sports: Protecting your Teeth

Studies consistently show that an active lifestyle is one of the most important factors to leading a long, healthy life. If you regularly play a sport or frequently participate in athletic activity, you have already made one of the best investments possible to your overall health. Now it’s time to consider the risks associated with sports, and the importance of proper gear. From the dental perspective, the easy answer is a mouth guard-a flexible appliance made of plastic that protects teeth from trauma. If you played high school or college sports, you may be familiar with mouthpieces. Unfortunately, most adults don’t practice the same safety measures as high school sports teams, and therefore are at greater risk for trauma to the mouth and teeth. If you participate in any activity with the potential for face injury, you should be using a mouth guard to avoid painful, unattractive and potentially costly dental damage.

  3. Medications: Medicines Prescribed for Other Health Issues May Adversely Affect Dental Health

Men are more likely to suffer from heart attacks, and are frequently prescribed medications that cause dry mouth. Heart and blood pressure medicines, as well as antidepressants can inhibit your salivary flow. What’s the big deal? Dry mouth increases your risk of cavities, as bacteria in your mouth can flourish. The solution: visit your dentist regularly, and make sure that you tell your dentist of any medications that you are taking. With the right information, your dentist will be able to address your dental needs more accurately.

Men also make up a large part of the growing number of cosmetic dentistry patients. Along with a healthy physique, men are finding that a fantastic smile can be a picture of health in itself. With many relatively inexpensive procedures available, it’s worth investigating while at your next visit, or online at: www.prestondentalcenter.com

Dental advice just for women:

It is common knowledge that men and women have different health needs, from basic nutrition to common ailments. Did you know that gender also plays a role in dental health?

Women experience many changes in their overall health based on hormonal levels within the body during different periods of their life. It should not come as a surprise, then, that even dental health is affected by hormone fluctuations. Here are some common changes/issues to be aware of:

Puberty-During puberty, fluctuations in hormones can make a woman more vulnerable to gingivitis. Gums may become sore and/or bleed.

Menstruation-the menstrual cycle can trigger canker and cold sore development, and some women experience a recurrence with every cycle.

Pregnancy-Pregnancy is also a period when women become vulnerable to gingivitis. In fact, it is the most common oral condition associated with being pregnant. The problem is exacerbated if an expecting mother avoids dental check-ups during pregnancy. Dental infections are attributed for up to 5% of low-birth-weight and pre-term babies. This is a startling, and disturbing correlation.

Dry mouth is another common complaint of the expectant mother. Sipping water and chewing sugarless gum can help alleviate this problem. A greater concern is morning sickness. The stomach acids that constantly churn due to this condition can permanently damage tooth enamel. Mothers who experience morning sickness need to increase their brushing more than twice a day.

Birth Control- Oral contraceptives can cause gum tissue changes. This can cause complications such as healing problems and dry socket after tooth extractions.

Menopause- There is a myriad of changes during menopause. From the dental perspective, women experience changes that range from oral burning sensations and pain, to changes in taste and dry mouth. After menopause, women are at increased risk of developing osteoporosis, which may increase the chance of tooth loss.

It’s important to maintain good dental hygiene and visit your dentist at least twice a year, through all of the changes of life. Hormonal changes are a fact of life, and developing a consistent dental hygiene regimen and a relationship with your family dentist can help you avoid many of the dental issues faced specifically by women. Preston Dental Center is a family-oriented practice, run by a husband-and-wife team. Finding a doctor who makes you feel comfortable and supports you through these life changes is essential. You need to be able to discuss and address these issues, and how they affect your health, with someone who understands and caress. Drs. Lisa and Greg Mayes are dedicated to a friendly, supportive dental practice that makes your family feel at home, and can care for your health through all the phases of life.

E4D Crowns = A new, permanent crown, the very day you need it.

The new E4D Crown offered by Dr. Mayes at Preston Dental Center revolutionizes the crown-making process, giving you same-day dental service. One office visit, problem solved.

Crowns are tooth-shaped caps that cover the entire surface of a tooth, adding strength, durability and stability and are used to treat damaged or decayed teeth. If you or a family member already have crowns, you are probably familiar with the lengthy process typically required. A crown can take 1-3 office visits and up to four weeks for completion. First, an impression is made in-office and a temporary crown is installed. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory to create the permanent crown, which is installed during the second appointment. Not only does the traditional process of making crowns require multiple office visits, but typically includes an initial unpleasant impression-making process, an aggravating 1-3 week period of wearing a temporary and unreliable crown, and the potential of a third visit if the crown does not fit properly.

The E4D Crown truly revolutionizes this process. With the E4D crown, patients are able to return home with their new, permanent crown in only one office visit. Even better, the impression-making process is completely computerized so there is no mess, goop, or bad taste. You will love how quickly Dr. Mayes can get you in and out the door with a permanent solution. No more worrying about your teeth for weeks on end. A quick, simple solution to a traditionally frustrating problem.

So, who says the “good old days” were better? Learn more about how we’ve improved dentistry today: http://www.prestondentalcenter.com/dental_crowns_cary_north_nc.html

Smile Makeovers!

Preston Dental Center knows that when your smile looks good, you feel good! Modern smile makeovers are easy, affordable and natural-looking. You’d be amazed what crowns, bonding and whitening can do for your smile, and your overall appearance.

Nothing speaks for your health, youth and vitality like your teeth. The reality is, as we age, so do our teeth, and a large part of the image that we project is through our smiles. Stained, crooked, broken or damaged teeth can make you and your teeth look older than you are. Nothing conveys confidence better than a polished, winning smile.

Room for improvement: Old methods get a makeover

Obtaining that gorgeous smile has only gotten easier. Advanced methods in dentistry have sped up procedures, making them safer, more comfortable, and sometimes cheaper. If you’ve looked at cosmetic dentistry in the past, it’s time to look again. Many improvements can be done now in only a day!

Fillings: Did you know that metal fillings do not bond well to teeth, so that decay eventually leaks into the tooth? White bonded fillings not only look better, matching your tooth color completely, but they bond extremely well, so there is much less chance of decay. They can, in fact, strengthen your teeth.

Braces: Six Month Smiles is a cosmetic braces system that straightens teeth in six months or less. Compare that to years with traditional braces! Also, Six Month Smiles uses clear or tooth-colored bands that are much more comfortable, and can hardly be seen. Invisalign is another popular option also available at Preston Dental Center, using clear, removable aligners, and it takes about half the time of traditional braces.

Teeth Whitening: Zoom2 Teeth Whitening does exactly that-zooms you through the process of tooth whitening. In only one office visit, in less than an hour, you can have brilliantly white teeth. Compare this to older processes that involved weeks and weeks of trays and gels that leaked into your mouth-yuck!

Crowns: Crowns are used on damaged and/or decayed teeth, and could traditionally take up to a month, including multiple doctor visits and wait time. E4D crowns are made in only one visit, while you wait. They replace worn, chipped or decayed teeth with perfect tooth-colored restorations and are bonded directly to your teeth. Beautiful!

Diabetes and Dentistry:

What do you have to be concerned about?

“Studies have shown that diabetics are more susceptible to the development of oral infections and periodontal (gum) disease than those who do not have diabetes. This relationship causes great concern because serious gum disease may have the potential to affect blood sugar control and contribute to the progression of diabetes.” (Durham Dental, Patient Information)

Understanding the Relationship between Diabetes and Dental Health:

If you have diabetes, you are probably already aware that diabetes reduces the body’s resistance to infection. You may not have considered that this makes you a more likely candidate for gingivitis and a variety of other oral conditions that can adversely affect your health. Here are a few to be aware of:

1. Gingivitis and Periodontitis. Gingivitis is a form of gum disease caused by bacteria, which is reversible. Unfortunately, untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is an irreversible destruction of the tissues that surround the teeth. The first signs are gums that are red, swollen and bleed easily. There is usually little or no pain. (Read more about periodontal disease)

2. Thrush. Thrush, also known as candidiasis, is an infection of the mucus membrane lining the mouth and tongue, caused by a fungus that grows in the mouth. This appears as white patches within the mouth and on the tongue.

3. Dry mouth. Dry mouth may sound innocuous, but it can cause soreness, ulcers, infections and cavities.

Consult a dentist if you show symptoms of any of these conditions. Depending upon the condition, a dentist can prescribe antibiotics, medicated moth rinses, and more frequent cleanings to prevent problems with bacterial infections in the mouth. People with diabetes who receive good dental care and maintain good insulin control have a better chance of avoiding gum disease. Maintaining a healthy diet and getting exercise are important parts of improving your quality of life and oral health. Also, keep both medical and dental care providers aware of your medical history and periodontal status.

Things you should do:

· Brush twice daily, using an antimicrobial toothpaste containing fluoride and rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash.

· Be aware of your blood sugar levels in addition to having your triglycerides and cholesterol levels checked on a regular basis.

· Schedule dental appointments in the morning because blood glucose levels tend to be more level at this time of day.

· See your dentist on a regular basis, and on your appointment day, eat and take your medications as directed.

Orthodontics and Adulthood: Thinking about improving your smile?

Do you feel embarrassed of your smile or that your crooked teeth take away from your appearance, but can’t imagine wearing braces to correct the problem? Have you been thinking about improving your smile due to discoloration, misshapen teeth, or gaps, but don’t want the attention or inconvenience of lengthy cosmetic dentistry? You may be pleasantly surprised by some of the options available to you.

Advances in dentistry have given adults discreet, comfortable and convenient options that take as little as two visits to 24 months, depending on the procedure. Here are a few of the options that Dr. Mayes offers in-office:

1. Invisalign (typically 9-15 months)

Invisalign™ makes it possible to have straight teeth in as little as 9 - 15 months. The Invisalign™ system consists of clear plastic custom-made aligners that are replaced every two weeks. No braces, wires or headgear, no mouth irritation, and no embarrassment. You can eat, drink, brush and floss as you normally would because the Invisalign™ system is removable. Even better, the Invisalign aligners are nearly undetectable. Invisalign™ is widely popular and is greatly preferred by adults for its convenience and effectiveness.

2. Six Months Smiles (typically 6 months)

Six Month Smiles can give you a beautiful smile, quickly and comfortably. If your teeth have gaps, or are crowded and overlapped, most cases can be completed in six months or less. Six Month Smiles modifies the best aspects and materials of traditional braces to provide a cosmetic solution that better suits an adult lifestyle. Clear brackets and tooth-colored wires, which are barely visible, are used to gently move the teeth that are visible in your smile to the desired position. This can be accomplished in a short time, it’s much more comfortable than traditional braces, and can barely be seen. The result? Straight teeth in months instead of years! Not everyone is a candidate for Six Month Smiles, so call Dr. Mayes for a complimentary consultation.

3. Veneers (typically 2 visits)

Porcelain veneers are very hard, thin coverings that are bonded to your teeth. They are a great option for patients concerned with misshapen teeth, gaps, deep discoloration or other problems that interfere with the attractiveness of your smile. They are very natural-looking, and nearly undetectable. Most are done in only two visits!

4. Tooth Whitening (from 1 hour-2 weeks, depending on the process)

Dr. Mayes offers two different types of tooth whitening, KöR Whitening Deep Bleaching, and ZOOM!2 Whitening. Both are highly acclaimed for quality and effectiveness. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Mayes to find out which is right for you.

Dentistry addresses heart attack, stroke and cancer:

You may be surprised to hear that some of the problems that can be found during a dental visit have been linked to heart attack, strokes, and cancer. Many people rely on their dentist for cosmetic reasons (to maintain their appearance), or if they have a dental emergency, such as a terrible toothache. However, visiting your dentist regularly is an important part of your overall health routine. A dentist can identify and help prevent some major medical issues that may go overlooked by other physicians. Here are some of the risks, signs and symptoms that you should be aware of.

Oral Cancer
Statistically, one American dies every hour from oral cancer. The great news is that there’s a 90% cure rate if it’s detected early. That’s why regular visits to your dentist are vital. At Preston Dental Center, one of the most effective FDA-approved oral cancer screening systems, VELscope, is used to examine tissues and identify problems early. This screening could literally save your life!

Sleep Apnea
Sleep Apnea is a condition in which a person stops breathing during sleep, multiple times per night. Snoring is one of the trademarks of sleep apnea; it indicates that the throat or tongue is blocking the airway and a person literally has to gasp or wake up to get the air they need. Sleep apnea puts a tremendous strain on the heart and brain, due to the continual interruption in oxygen flow, and has been linked to headaches, snoring, heart attacks and strokes. Treatment, once diagnosed, typically results in an oral appliance worn at night. These appliances have a 96% success rate. Not only does this treatment help you avoid major medical risks, but it improves the overall quality of your sleep, resulting in feeling well-rested and energized.

Gingivitis and Periodontitis
Gingivitis is a form of periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. Periodontal disease involves inflammation and infection that destroys the tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, the periodontal ligaments, and the tooth sockets. Periodontitis is the result of Gingivitis that goes untreated. Gum disease, surprisingly, has been linked to health problems such as stroke and heart disease. Diabetes is not only a risk factor for gum disease, but gum disease may make diabetes worse. Seeing your dentist for preventive care is the best medicine, but if you have already been diagnosed with gum disease, there are alternatives to gum surgery. Preston Dental Center offers a new, painless method called Perioprotect, a form of laser gum treatment.

Foods that Cause Tooth Decay

Many people think that tooth decay is only caused by eating candy and drinking soda. So, they stop eating candy and drinking soda. However, they are greatly disappointed when they find out they still have tooth problems. We have compiled a small list of foods that can cause tooth decay. To help keep your teeth in good condition, try avoiding the following foods:

Avoid Sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • White sugar
  • Corn syrup
  • Evaporated cane juice
Flour & Grain Products
  • Wheat flour
  • White flour
  • Bread
  • Cookies
  • Doughnuts
  • Muffins
Hydrogenated Oils
  • Margarine
  • Vegetable oil
  • Crisco
  • Canola
Junk Food
  • Chocolate candy bars
  • Potato chips
  • Soda
  • Sugar-filled drinks
The list of foods and ingredients is only a handful of foods that cause tooth decay. There are plenty of other foods and ingredients that can cause major tooth problems. If you eat the foods listed above in moderation, make sure you brush your teeth (2-3 minutes) and floss in the morning, after eating and before you go to bed. Also, make sure you visit the dentist regularly.

There are many foods that we eat that can speed up the process of tooth decay. The good news is that if you practice good tooth care regularly, you can help prevent tooth decay or at least slow down the process of decay.

Dental Tips for Busy Parents

Tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease can start in childhood. If you're a busy mom or dad, it can be difficult to squeeze in extra time during your day to educate your kids about dental hygiene. So, we have developed a quick list to help you stay on track with your child's dental care.

Use a toothbrush timer
To help keep your child's teeth healthy, they should brush their teeth at least 2 to 3 minutes. Consider purchasing a toothbrush that comes with a timer. This will assure that he/she is brushing for more than a few seconds. Using a stopwatch or a timer will work perfectly as well.

Give the kids an incentive
Every time your child brushes their teeth and floss (consistently), consider giving them an award. It doesn't have to be expensive. Giving your child a colorful sticker star is enough to get them excited about maintaining healthy teeth. When you give your kids an incentive for eating healthy and keeping their teeth healthy will help prevent expensive dental problems in the future.

Dental Checkups
A child should have dental checkups at least 2 times a year. A child's dental visit should be scheduled as early as age 1.
When a child maintains healthy teeth, they are less likely to have dental problems when they grow older. Every parent’s goal should be to help keep their child cavity-free.

5 Great Tips to Prevent Tooth Decay

When some people think about tooth decay, they immediately associate it with people who smoke and chew tobacco. In reality, sugar is the culprit. The following are tips to prevent tooth decay:

Use non-sugar sweeteners
Saccharine, sorbitol and aspartame are great substitutes because they don’t produce tooth decay. The next time you’re tempted to add sugar to your coffee or tea, try to replacing sugar with non-sugar sweeteners.

Eat healthy sweets
If you love eating sweets, eat snacks that have the tooth-friendly logo. These mouthwatering sweets contain non-sugar sweeteners. If you have young children (or grand-children) this should be avoided because it can cause some GIT disturbance.
Avoid Drinking Soda
Carbonated drinks like soda are so acidic that it can help speed up the process of tooth decay. There are many soda substitutes that you can drink. For example, there are many healthy flavored spritzers that you can drink instead of drinking soda. Another great substitute is to drink fruit juice. Just make sure you choose healthy brands that are low on sugar.

Eat fiber rich natural foods
Examples of foods rich in fiber are vegetables. Fresh vegetables are not only healthy for your body; it can also help prevent tooth decay. Vegetables have what is known as a ‘mechanical cleaning action’ that removes bacteria from the tooth surface.

Chew sugar-free gum
Chewing sugar-free gum is great for stimulating saliva production.

Well, there you have it; five tips that can help you prevent tooth decay.

Dental Tips for Diabetics

It is important that people with diabetes take good care of their teeth. Diabetics are at a higher risk for mouth infections and gum disease. Gum disease can damage the gum and bone that hold your teeth together. This can be extremely painful when chewing food. There are many Americans who suffer from pain when chewing. As a diabetic, this problem should not be ignored. If you are experiencing any type of oral pain, schedule a dental appointment immediately.

Brush, Floss and Control Your Blood Glucose
In addition to keeping your teeth and gums healthy, it is important that you control your blood glucose. You should also brush and floss your teeth daily. Make sure you schedule for a dental checkup at least 1 to 2 times a year. At Preston Dental Center, we can help you prevent gum disease.

Here are a few steps to help keep your mouth healthy:

  • Brush and floss at least 3 times a day.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol
  • Visit your dentist 1 to 2 times a year for a checkup.
  • Control your blood glucose levels. This can help prevent mouth problems.

If you notice your gums bleeding when you brush and floss or you notice white patches, soreness and dryness, contact your dentist. These are all signs that you may have a serious dental problem.

Lastly, if you wear dentures that do not fit properly, or your gums feel tender and sore, make sure you tell your dentist.

Gum Disease: What You Should Know Now

Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? If so you might be at risk for periodontal disease, or gum disease. Over half of American adults have some form of gum disease and aren't even aware. That's why trips to the dentist are crucial: general dentistry practice can identify and treat this disease.

Signs include red, puffy, and bleeding gums. Some patients report shooting pains in their mouths, while others have no symptoms at all. Because the gums support the teeth, gum disease can lead to loss of teeth. Even worse, the condition can begin to affect health in other parts of the body. Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer, and other diseases.

Some treatments for gum disease include scaling and root planing, as well as antibiotic treatment. It's important to start treatment right away so that it doesn't spread or cause major discomfort. Your dentist can tell you the proper treatment for you.

Many patients don't get the proper patient education about gum disease, so it's important to go to a general dentistry practice where the dentist will sit with you and explain what you need to do to keep your gums healthy. Be sure to see a dentist who can diagnose and better yet, treat your gum disease so you are not at risk for more serious complications.

Healthy teeth and gums are important not just for a beautiful smile, but to preserve the health of your body as a whole.

6 Steps to the Right Dentist

Choosing the right dentist can be difficult. Many dentists offer general dentistry services, so how can you be sure one is right for you? Here are 6 things to consider before choosing a compatible dentist.

1- Is the support staff kind and courteous?
This is the first thing you'll find out anyway, as support staff will answer the phone when you call. The attitude of those the dentist employs may reflect the attitude of the entire office, so pay attention to the treatment you receive from support staff.

2- Find out the dentist's experience.
Find out a little about the dentist who will be working for you. How long have they been practicing general dentistry? How long has this particular practice been open? Do they have any specialties? Do they take continuing education classes?

3- Do they offer emergency care?

4- How much do procedures cost?
Before going to see any dentist, find out about the costs involved with care. Dental insurance covers many preventative procedures, and there are other programs to help pay for dentistry, but you want to have a good idea of how much out-of-pocket expense may be on the line.

5- Does the dentist offer modern treatments?
For example, are dental lasers used instead of tooth drills? It's easy to find out how modern a practice is by simply inquiring about the newest equipment they have or what they've recently learned.

6- What is in place to make the patient comfortable?
Does the dentist allow patients to listen to music during procedures? Does the dentist pre-medicate patients before certain work is done?

Asking these questions before you decide on a general dentistry practice will give you a great idea of what to expect from a dentist.

A Better Smile with Porcelain Veneers

Many people have seen television makeovers and want to know whether they too can trade in their smile for a gorgeous, brand new one. The answer is usually yes, with the proper general dentistry practice and porcelain veneers, a wonderful smile is not far away.

Having a smile full of stained, crooked, and chipped teeth can be embarrassing. People who have had veneers done report higher self-esteem, more confidence, and greater success in the dating world. Luckily, the procedure is not difficult and positive effects can be seen in a short period of time.

Typically the process toward porcelain veneers begins with a planning session. The dentist will look at which kind of veneers will look right in your mouth and take out some of the existing tooth enamel in order to accommodate the incoming veneers. Usually temporary veneers are place on the teeth while the permanent veneers are made in a dental lab. Finally the permanent ones are installed and the dentist explains how best to take care of your new teeth.

Because they mimic the appearance of natural teeth, porcelain veneers can replace stained, discolored, chipped, and crooked teeth and make them appear natural, clean, and bright. Come talk to us about having a beautiful smile today!

Risk Factors of Oral Cancer

April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and dentists are the first line of defense against this pervasive disease. So we’re going to post a series of short discussions about the facts, risks, diagnosis, and treatment of oral cancer throughout the month. Please ask questions in the comments, and don’t hesitate to contact the office with your concerns or to schedule a screening.

Earlier this month, we talked about the devastating statistics relating to fatality rates for oral cancer. Today we’re going to talk about who is predisposed to contracting it.

The first risk factor usually cited is age. Historically, the majority of cases occurred over age 40. Things have changed in this decade, however.

Most of you will guess that tobacco use is a huge risk factor, and it is. Combine that with alcohol consumption, and you’ve got a 15x greater risk than someone who does neither.

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation or x-ray radiation is another factor. Oral cancer caused by too much sun exposure has decreased, thanks to awareness and use of sunscreens. Occasional x-ray exposure is safe; this damage accumulates over a long period of time.

On the rise are oral cancers caused by viruses and fungus, especially HPV16.

All patients should be sure their dentists give them a full oral cancer screening at each regular visit, but those with the above risk factors should be especially diligent.

The Surprising Facts about Oral Cancers

April is National Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and dentists are the first line of defense against this pervasive disease. So we’re going to post a series of short discussions about the facts, risks, diagnosis, and treatment of oral cancer throughout the month. Please ask questions in the comments, and don’t hesitate to contact the office with your concerns or to schedule a screening.

Out of about 37,000 American patients diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year, over 8,000 will die. That’s a rate of about one person per hour, 24 hours a day, every single day. The five-year survival rate is only about 50% of those patients, a number that hasn’t changed in decades. More people die from oral cancer than many other, higher-profile cancers. How many of you know all about cervical, testicular, or skin cancer, and take precautions against them? How many cancers do you get screened for by your medical professionals each year? Now, how many of you have knowingly had a screening for oral cancer?

You might think the fatality rate is so high because oral cancer is particularly dangerous. But that’s not the case. The death rate is high because it’s often not discovered until late stage. By then, it has usually metastasized to somewhere else in the body, starting with the lymph nodes in the neck. The first tumor has also been given time to invade deeply, making treatment more difficult. Often, there’s no pain or other symptom you can easily recognize, and it also easily produces additional tumors, so recurrence happens frequently.

Don’t take chances with your life. Make an appointment with us today. We routinely screen for oral cancer, a quick and painless diagnostic that can give you peace of mind…or save your life.

All About Dental Crowns

Need a crown for your tooth, but worried or anxious about the process and numerous visits to the dentist? Preston Dental has a solution for you. The purpose of a dental crown is to replace a damaged tooth. Traditional treatment usually includes taking an impression of the tooth, fabricating the crown in a lab, and installing the crown. This process can take up to 4 weeks, and include multiple visits to the dentist office.

Preston Dental's solution for crowns is called "same day dentistry." This consists of a new technology the works with a computer. The computer will actually scan and create a virtual model of your tooth. The crown is then fabricated and installed right there in the dentist office. There is no gook, no bad taste, and no waiting for weeks on end. This is the perfect solution for anyone needing a crown, and anyone who is sensitive to fresh material in their mouth. The whole process takes only one visit, which means less time at the dentist, and more time enjoying your new smile.

Beautiful and Natural-looking Smiles

Preston Dental knows that when you have a confident smile, you feel and look good! That is why Preston Dental emphasizes the aesthetic in all of their work. The combination of preventative care, tooth-colored fillings, and restorative techniques will help you reach better dental health.

One treatment for a natural-looking smile is to replace the standard silver-mercury filling with white bonded fillings. The white bonded fillings look better, contain no metals, and can help strengthen your teeth. The metal in standard fillings is not tooth-colored, and does not bond as well to teeth. It eventually decays and can leak into the tooth. White bonded fillings bond tightly to the healthy part of the tooth to better eliminate the chance of future decay. These fillings are just one way that Preston Dental wants to help you achieve a beautiful and natural-looking smile.

The Truth About Crowns

Making crowns for teeth used to be a complicated process. The "usual" method involved taking an impression of the tooth and sending it to a lab where it takes a long time to create the crown. While waiting for the crown, the patient would wear a temporary crown, which didn't look good and could break easily. Only after the lab-made crown is complete can the patient come back for a second or third visit. Thank goodness these days are over!

Using E4D technology, the worn, chipped, or decayed teeth can be replaced with perfect tooth colored restorations. These restorations are bonded to the teeth and can last for years and years. E4D technology also allows us to complete the whole process in just 1 visit! You will leave with your permanent teeth with no need for a temporary crown. The result is a beautiful, strong, and metal-free crown restoration. Have no fear after the restoration and eat normally right away. E4D technology offered by Preston Dental is the best option for tooth restoration.
