Dental Technology

Have you ever been curious or interested to see what your dentist sees? Want to know more about what is actually going on with your teeth? Thanks to a current dental technology offered by Preston Dental called the Intra-oral camera, you can now be a part of the dental team.

The doctors work hand-in-hand with patients to create a bond of teamwork using this technology. The Intra-oral camera is a high-tech tool featuring a miniature video camera that displays a close-up picture of the inside of your mouth. You can finally see for yourself what work needs to be done and which teeth are doing fine. This technology makes it easier for you to see and understand the treatments that are recommended by your dentist. It will help you have more confidence in your teeth, in the service you receive, and in your dentist. You are now a participant in each dental decision. You’ll love how this works!

Facts About Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that is far more common than generally understood. Apnea episodes can occur from 30 to 60 times per night. Apnea episodes are involuntary breathing pauses and cause oxygen deprivation. These breathing pauses can be accompanied by snoring, although not everyone who snores has this condition. In addition to snoring, sleep apnea can also be characterized by choking sensations. The frequent interruptions of deep, restorative sleep leads to early morning headaches, excessive daytime sleepiness, and irritability. Oxygen deprivation also puts a strain on the heart.

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are medical problems, so at Preston Dental, we make sure your individual situation is fully addressed by starting with an objective medical assessment. After referral from a physician, you’ll receive a thorough dental examination and we will discuss all options, advantages, limitations, and consequences. Early recognition and treatment of sleep apnea is important because it is a potentially life-threatening condition. Sleep apnea can be associated with irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Get diagnosed, and get treatment today.

The Truth About Cavities

Let's face it, no one likes cavities, and no one likes to deal with them.

Have you ever had a dentist find a cavity and place a large filling, and wondered why the filling is so large if the cavity has only been there for a small amount of time? Well, the truth is the cavity has probably been there longer than you think. It just wasn't detectable by X-ray, and was not visible to the dentist.

Did you know that there are new technology in laser scanners that find cavities years earlier? The small cavity can be removed and repaired with a small invisible bonded filling. The laser scanner can detect previously undetected decay, and once identified, allow us to remove any problem areas leaving you with a healthy smile.

Cavities are caused by a bacterial infection known as "caries". The infection is treatable, and preventable. Dr. Mayes uses the CariFree ™ program, which was developed to help patients become cavity free by assessing the risks for dental disease and diagnosing the presence of bacterial caries.

Dr. Mayes loves helping patients prevent cavities using this system that has proven to be extremely effective. When you visit us at Preston Dental Center, you will receive a "caries risk assessment," and we will evaluate whether you have factors present that put you at risk for decay.

We want you to be cavity free!
